Donut worry, be happy

Saying that I love donuts is an understatement. My 4th tattoo was a donut for crying out loud. I've eaten a lot of donuts in my short like, and I have a plump midsection to show for it. No ragrets! One would consider me a donut connoisseur of sorts.

There are many different ways to ice a donut. But there are only a few types of donuts.
This is an old fashioned donut.

The reason it is "old fashioned" is because it uses buttermilk as an ingredient. However, nowadays buttermilk is usually substituted for sour cream. You can hardly tell the difference, but once you know there's sour cream as an ingredient it's kind of obvious especially if you taste them side by side. The old fashioned donut is one of my top favorites, especially when it's made with buttermilk.

The most common type of donut is a yeast donut, or also known as a glazed donut. While the main ingredients are the same, every donut shop makes their donuts differently. Some yeast donuts are perfectly light and fluffy, and some are just too dense. There are 2 places in Kansas that make the best yeast donuts, (believe it or not there's no donut shops in Florida, which is a tragedy.) Krispy Kreme is the first place, which mostly everyone has heard of. The second place is called Drubers. It's a little family owned and operated donut shop in Newton, Kansas. They've been there FOREVER. They actually just recently came under new ownership right before I left. One thing unique about Drubers is the hours they operate. So they're open from 11pm, to 2pm the next day. Yes folks, they're open over night. HOW COOL IS THAT! As you can imagine, it's a very popular teen hangout. That doesn't mean the older crowd doesn't kick it there though. There is one group of old ladies that like to go there around 2am. Always gossiping and playing cards. While yeast donuts are pretty straight forward, there are places like Hurts Donut that take glazed donuts to a whole new level. Hurts Donut has the widest variety of interesting flavors that you can imagine. My personal favorite is the maple bacon donut. Yeah you read that right, MAPLE BACON. Don't turn your nose up without trying it! You won't regret it.  This picture shows an example of just a few of the crazy flavors Hurts Donut has on their shelves. (I made the picture extra big so you could read the small signs)

The second most common type of donut is a cake donut. Now, I'm a huge yeast donut fan, but a lot of donut eaters prefer cake donuts. They're drier, but more flavorful like a cake. Hence the name. The possibilities are truly endless for cake donuts because not only can you make the icing different flavors, but you can also mess around with the actual donut flavor as well. Most of Hurts Donuts products are cake donuts, so they really go all out in flavor combinations. What makes Hurts Donut even more unique is the fact that they never have the same stuff on the shelves! Every time you walk in to the store you take a gamble on if your favorite donut is ready, or if you're going to try something new that night. One awesome thing about Hurts Donut, they are open 24/7! Woop woop.

Lastly, we have filled donuts. I avoid these at all costs, because you never know what crap is shoved into the middle of the donut. You could be expecting boston creme and it's actually banana pudding, or raspberry jam. Plus, it's messy and 9 times out of 10 you will drip the filling on your shirt. Or the only white shirt that you own which is now ruined from a raspberry jam stain.  Whatever.

As you can see, I really do love donuts. It upsets me greatly that there isn't a damn donut shop in Florida besides Dunkin' Donuts, and their donuts are just generic. I might get creative and start making my own, but for now I will have to deal with it. And maybe lose a few pounds
