The shift that I currently work is 5:30pm-2am with every Friday and Saturday off. Many people do not enjoy this schedule, but I happen to love it. During the summer, I am able to go out every weekend if I chose to, and then not have to work until 5:30pm on Sundays so I can spend the majority of the day with my family.
From about 5:30pm-9:30/10pm we are pretty busy with calls. Some days are definitely busier than others. The most consistent thing is how slow we are after midnight. I find myself playing a lot of solitaire, with actual cards. I know right, how archaic. We are not allowed to play computer or web based games so that is why I use cards. The problem is, you cannot undo or restart your game when you play Solitaire with cards.
Just a guess, but playing Solitaire on the computer I would say my win to lose ratio is about 3-to-1. If I am playing with actual cards, my win ratio is about 1-1. So for every game I win, I will lose a game.
Some hands are unwinnable from the start. This can happen in a couple of different ways. You can bury the card you need and not be able to get it out, or the card you need can be buried waiting to be turned over but you can't because you need that card to move the card on top. I do feel more accomplished winning games IRL versus on the computer though, so I guess that counts for something.
There are many different versions of solitaire, some are easy and some are hard. My favorite is the classic Klondike solitaire. I also really like Algerian patience. It involves 2 decks of cards, and takes a couple of minutes to set up. Algerian patience is actually easier playing with real cards versus playing on the computer. Don't ask me to explain why because I have no idea. I just know that I have won 100% of games played with cards and about 70% of games played on the computer. It's difficult to grasp at first but once you get the hang of it, the game is very fun.
Another thing I do during my down time is write these blog posts. I really would like to get back into writing because it is something I enjoy. Someone once told me that when you write for yourself, that is when your writing is the best. Once you start writing for your readers, that is when your writing quality begins to decline.
I was serious when I said I wanted to take a writer's workshop. But between all the trips I am taking this summer, it is just not practical because I will always be missing something! So the creative writing class I took next semester will have to wait. To say I am excited is an understatement.
