Keep calm and eat a pickle

Picture this: My boyfriend Alex and I are on a date at Chili's. You know, sitting across from each other at one of those obnoxiously small tables they have. Right. So we are talking about pretty much anything, which is how our dates usually go. This time I am unsure what to order because even though I was starving, nothing was sounding too good to me. After perusing the menu for a couple of minutes I was torn between a bacon burger and fajitas. Remembering the last time I ate at Chili's with my brother, I chuckle a little to myself. Naturally, Alex asks me what I could possibly find funny while looking at a menu. Then I tell him this story as follows: "The last time I was here with my brother I got the bacon burger and after eating half of it, I took a bite of a pickle only to realize it was more of a cucumber" (Seriously though, it was disgusting. It tasted like the cucumber had only been pickling for like, an hour or something so it was still 90% a cucumber)

The look on Alex's face will forever be ingrained into my memory, the look of utter confusion. He says, "they put cucumbers on your burger!?" At this point, I'm the one confused. Then it something dawns on me. "Babe, you know that pickles are just pickled cucumbers, right?" His response told me what I needed to know, he said "Ummmmmmmmmmm they are?"

Just a little side note, in my head during all of this I am torn between making fun of him (which is my natural instinct) and letting him off the hook by being nice and educating him. It is taking all of my willpower not to laugh at him. But come on, everyone knows that you pickle a cucumber to make a pickle, right???? Wrong…………………

Alex grew up in Ohio, so they must not have pickles in Ohio. That's the only thing I can think of that makes sense to me how this 23 year old man does not know that pickles are manmade. He actually told me "I thought they grew in the ground like other vegetables, I've never eaten a whole one just the ones on hamburgers" ummmm sorry but that's wrong. After explaining to my man-baby about how pickles are made, and how that all works, I decided to let him off the hook just this once and not make fun of him. Which was hard. Extremely hard.

We left Chili's with full stomachs and a laugh.
